Debby Crabtree hosted the Tuesday, Feb. 21 Jackson Rotary program. When not wearing her Rotary hat, Dr. Debby Crabtree is the Director of Special Projects for Jackson City Schools. She reviewed Jackson City Schools’ before and after school tutoring programs. SUCCESS is the name of JCS before and after school tutoring programs that are held at Northview, Southview, Westview, Jackson Middle School and Jackson high School.

SUCCESS coordinates with Latchkey child care Monday through Friday starting at 6:30 a.m. and closing at 6:00 p.m. in the three elementary schools. Tutoring is available Monday through Thursday for kindergarten through 5th grade students. All students enrolled in the SUCCESS programs have access to homework assistance in reading and math.

Before and after school programs serve children and youth of all ages, and encompass a broad range of focus areas including academic support, mentoring and youth development. The activities in which children and youth engage while outside regular school hours are critical to their development. The SUCCESS program helps to generate positive outcomes for youth including improved academic performance, classroom behavior and an improved quality of life.

Dr. Denise Shockley assisted Dr. Crabtree during the review of the SUCCESS program. Dr. Shockley is the Superintendent of the Gallia-Vinton Education Service Center. The SUCCESS program was started with a 21st Century Community Learning grant from the Ohio Department of Education. Jackson City Schools and the Gallia-Vinton Educational Service Center partnered to create the SUCCESS program in Jackson. Dr. Shockley discussed how the grant funding is managed and he need for sustainability. Jackson’s SUCCESS program serves 800 to 1,000 youth every year and provides employment opportunities to over 150 local staff members and students annually.

In addition to getting the latest information on our before and after school SUCCESS programs, Jackson Rotarians welcomed February Seniors of the Month Alex Humphreys and Jace Vermillion back to the Jackson Rotary Club.
