Wheelchair Body Builder Nick Scott Speaks to Area High School Sophomores
The Gallia-Vinton ESC was instrumental in bringing Nick Scott to the campus of Rio Grande to meet with high school sophomore students and speak of Making the Right Choices.  Students from Jackson, Wellston, Gallipolis and Vinton County schools joined together for a Transition Fair.  The purpose of the event was to support students in making a smooth transition from high school to the workforce or higher educational opportunities.  Nick Scott's message was intended to inspire students to focus on their possibilities and build their assets to bring their goals to fruition. Students shared an appreciation for Mr. Scott and all that he has accomplished in spite of his challenges; students expressed he definitely impacted their thoughts about their own potential!

Following the morning session with Mr. Scott, the students enjoyed a lunch at the Rio Grande cafeteria.  In the afternoon, students attended 30-minute sessions regarding Self-Advocacy, Money Management, Job Preparation, Communications, Teamwork, Professionalism, Problem Solving, and Attitude. The informational sessions were presented by various state and regional organizations like Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD).

Students were met on campus by Rio Ambassadors (current Rio students).  Each high school student received a tote, fidget cube, earbuds, notebook, pen, McDonald Gift Card and pencil.  At the end of the day student prizes were drawn.  A drawing was held for each district and prizes of two (2) - RCA Android 7 inch Tablets and three (3) iTune Gift Cards were awarded to students from each school district.

This was the seventh Transition Fair presented for students with special needs since 2011. The next Transition Fair is scheduled for September 2018 and will again take place at the University of Rio Grande campus.
