Chesapeake Union Exempted Village Schools- Library Renovation

Emily Crabtree, Laurel Marion and Chesapeake Middle School teachersChesapeake Middle School embarked on an exciting project to upgrade its library, aiming to provide students with updated resources and a revitalized space for learning. Providing support for the project were Emily Crabtree, GVESC Assistant Superintendent, and Laurel Marion, GVESC Technology Consultant, both former middle school librarians. The project began with a collection analysis, revealing that the average age of the library's books dated back to 1995. Recognizing the need for newer, more relevant materials, Pat Kelley and Tina Wilcoxon took on the task of weeding outdated books. To ensure a balanced collection, a library service curated a list of new titles, filling in gaps in both fiction and non-fiction. Existing furnishings were cleaned and repaired, new carpet was installed, and café-style tables were introduced to create a welcoming environment where students can study and collaborate. In addition, the library’s technology was upgraded to make finding resources easier for students.

ELA teachers, reading teachers, and intervention specialists participated in training to allow them to check out books for their students directly, streamlining the process. Chesapeake High School also received an updated collection to meet the evolving needs of its students. Special thanks to Principal Glenn Dillon and the Chesapeake administration for their support in the renovation, which has created an inviting and positive space that will foster a love for reading and learning.
