Gallia-Vinton ESC Employees Venture South for Insights into Appalachia

ESC StaffTwenty-four Gallia-Vinton ESC employees traveled to Berea College for a retreat September 12-14. The retreat's goals were to collaborate and expand Gallia-Vinton ESC services, to foster and build work relationships, and to explore and celebrate Appalachian culture. Nestled in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains, just north of the Daniel Boone National Forest, Berea College offers its students an exceptional opportunity—a tuition-free liberal arts education that spotlights Appalachian people and culture. Within this setting, staff members at the retreat were educated, not only about Berea’s unique work-study program, but also about Appalachian reform movements. Berea’s mission, to work together to improve the lives of Appalachians by listening to local voices and investing in local communities, is similar to the GVESC’s mission to build services to enhance the capacity of schools through school and community initiatives.  Participants of the retreat lodged at the Historic Boone Tavern Hotel. Performances by the famous bluegrass band The McLain Family, acclaimed storyteller Octavia Sexton, and distinguished potter Sarah Culbreth provided entertainment for all while showcasing Appalachian traditions.
