Summer Academies
Summer Math Academy
Gallia-Vinton ESC hosted 114 math teachers and educational leaders for a three day in-person training. The PK-6 Summer Math Academy was facilitated by Creative Mathematics’ founder and national presenter, Kim Sutton. Kim is a dynamic, extraordinary educator whose enthusiasm and love for teaching are contagious. During the Summer Math Academy, she gave teachers practical strategies to motivate students while teaching the mathematics standards. GVESC is partnering with Kim Sutton to continue this work, coaching teachers and educational leaders as they implement those strategies this school year.  For more information or in-district support, please contact Robin Phillips at [email protected].

Summer Literacy Academy
Over 70 teachers from five local districts (Gallipolis City, Oak Hill, Wellston, Jackson, and Vinton County) participated in the June Literacy Academy sponsored by the Gallia-Vinton ESC. The virtual event, held via Zoom, featured literacy trainers from The Ohio State University, including Wendy Reed (pictured above) and Jenny McFerin (pictured below). Daily sessions focused on “Responding to Learners’ Strengths and Needs Using Data.” During the academy, teachers learned classroom strategies and techniques to strengthen their reading and writing lessons for the upcoming school year. According to one participant, “The writing portion of the training was very relevant to the district’s needs.  The presenters did an excellent job at creating an authentic learning experience that utilized real situations.” The committee will begin planning for next summer’s literacy training, hoping that in-person learning can resume in 2022. Summer Technology Academy
The Gallia-Vinton ESC hosted four back-to-school technology training sessions in August.  Area teachers participated in two online sessions covering the basics of implementing and using Google Classroom as a platform to provide content to students whether they remain in-person or would have to transition to remote learning.  A third session provided teachers with new features in Google Workspace applications.  This session also covered new technology finds to help teachers integrate technology into their curriculum.  A fourth session added instruction on how to create Google Classroom headers. The session concluded with time to create and ask questions, allowing teachers to leave the session with Google Classroom headers they could use immediately.  According to Jackson’s Tamara Washington, “I learned a lot that I'm going to be able to use to make my job easier.” For more information, contact Laurel Marion (Google Certified Educator and RemotEDx Technology Coach) at [email protected].
