Landmark Moments Fellowship Exploring Maine
Dr. Ron Morris and teachersOn November 8, members of the Landmark Moments cohort gathered at the University of Rio Grande to discuss meaningful social studies instruction. To begin the session, Dr. Ron Morris of Ball State University presented participants with primary sources about General Henry Knox and secondary sources regarding Joshua Chamberlain.

The group also examined maps of farm growth in Maine whilst examining how the state has changed through technology, industry, and the environment. The cohort members completed a data retrieval chart about three historical landmarks in Maine: the Neal Dowd House, Tate House, and Victorian Mansion.  Practical strategies for how to utilize their educational trip to Maine in June 2022 with students in their classrooms were also explored. In fact, 97% of participants stated that they could list ways to bring data back from field trips. Waylon Massie from Jackson High School stated that “...the session covered everything from Civil War battle narratives to log cabin construction in Maine.” He also said that “It’s wonderful to be surrounded by teachers who are passionate about their jobs and their content.”

In addition to these practical lessons, information about Ohio History Day was presented by the GVESC’s David Moore, and information in regard to National Board certification was presented by Dr. Morris.
